I dont know if you know them, but "They might be giants" are awesome |D every song of them. Next: Mm thou they dont have a lot of original music, more of it is covered, yet "Me first and the gimme gimmes" : D also I listen to The Cure (but they're pretty popular XDDDD), Fleet Foxes, Iron and wine sometimes. Mm and I'm pretty obssesed with the musicals' soundtracks. (now I'm into "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and I'm listening to sountrack of "The Cabaret"/youknow, with Liza Minelli/|DDD )
Rammstein(German rock metal), Oomph!(German rock, a little more American sounding), Mindless Self Indulgence(Totally an indescribable mix of pop rock hip-hop rap crazy crackas), Flight of the Conchords(Parody, comedy, folk)... eh yeaarh. Ennnnjoyyyy
I'm not sure if anyone under the age of 40 is into my favorite bands but since you asked...
Rush - They are, well, different. The lead singer has a very high pitched and nasally voice, but it works. Not only do I like the sound of their music, but I also love the actual meaning behind their words. Favorite songs: The Trees [link] Early Distant Warning [link] Subdivisions [link] The Larger Bowl (One of the best but I can't find anything that isn't live)
Genesis - Again, I found them to have a different sound. Most people fight about if Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel was the better lead singer, but I like both. Favorite songs: That's All [link] Land of Confusion [link] I Can't Dance [link] None of the good Peter Gabriel stuff has any good sound
Peter Gabriel - Off of that, I love Peter on his own. The music videos are genius. Sledgehammer [link] Games Without Frontiers [link] Big Time [link]
Yes - Back into the progressive rock that I seem to love so much. I think I just love how their voices sound together. Owner of a Lonely Heart [link] Roundabout [link] And youtube managed to kick off all of the other good songs.
I listen to alot of bands but those are the main ones I would recommend. There is also the Beatles, CCR, the Doobie Brothers, the Lovin' Spoonful, Tears for Fears, Styx, the Turtles, Kansas, Sting or the Police, Queen, the Rolling Stones, the Who, and Billy Joel.
tl;dr
